Being a tropical island paradise surrounded by the crystalline blue waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has some of the best beaches in the world. But, with so many, which beaches are the best of the best?

Here are a few of our picks for the best beaches in Zanzibar:

Michamvi beach and peninsula

The Michamvi peninsula on the central east coast of Zimbabwe’s main island has vast stretches of beautiful empty beach to explore and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There are 2 large luxury resorts nearby, yet it still feels remote, and beach-goers can definitely find peace by the splashing shores.

The eastern side of the peninsula looks out onto a vibrant coral lagoon from palm-lined beaches set in scenic coves among high coral cliffs, while the western side looks out over the serene crystal-blue waters of Chwaka Bay.

Nungwi beach

Nungwi is one of the liveliest areas on the island, especially at night. It is particularly popular for its nightlife, and has a lot of resorts, hotels, restaurants, and bars to meet the demand for night-time entertainment.

However, outside of the party hours, you can see stunning, vibrant coral reefs, and even head out for some diving or snorkeling. Swim with dolphins, green turtles, and maybe even the giant, friendly whale sharks (at certain times of the year).

Kendwa beach

You will find a quieter atmosphere just south on Kendwa Beach, the “little sister” of Nungwi. But still, when the sun drops below the horizon after one of Kendwa’s stunning sunsets, this beach also bursts into life with its chill beach parties.

The crystal waters here are absolutely perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving during the day. You can even spot some colorful starfish just offshore!

Bwejuu beach

Bwejuu is the perfect spot to soak in the sun, the sea, and the local Zanzibari culture. It’s one of the quieter areas of Zanzibar, so it’s a great choice for travelers seeking some peace and tranquility.

This palm-lined, glistening white sandy beach is just an hour and a half away from Stone Town, and lies right next to the local village of Bwejuu. Take a dhow boat trip through the mangroves, go on a reef safari, do some diving or snorkeling, or take a trip to the nearby Jozani Forest – there is no shortage of activities when you’re in Bwejuu.

Matemwe beach

Matemwe is the longest beach on Zanzibar, located on the idyllic north-eastern coast of the main island. Chill out on the ultra-fine sand under the swaying palm trees, or check out the charming traditional fishing villages nearby.

This area has some of the best spots for diving, snorkeling, sailing, and kitesurfing. Heading offshore, you will cross a stunning coral reef before you reach the famous Mnemba Atoll – one of the best scuba-diving spots in the archipelago!

Paje beach

Paje beach has everything you could want in a beach: a peaceful place to bask in the sun’s rays and ocean’s breeze; perfect conditions for kitesurfing and other watersports; great spots for scuba diving with plenty of friendly and colorful marine life; and, when the sun goes down, Paje becomes a lively but relaxed party spot.

Located on the south-east coast, it is more laid-back here than in Zanzibar’s popular northern beaches. The long stretches of white sand underneath the swaying palms are perfect for sitting back and admiring the glistening waters and spectacular sunsets.

Zanzibar’s beaches

Zanzibar is truly blessed when it comes to beaches. There are still many more beautiful beaches that could be included on this list, but a visit to any of these will leave you more than satisfied.

We fully encourage your adventurous spirits to take the roads less traveled and seek out the many more incredible Zanzibari beaches. If you want any additional advice for your beach getaway, just get in touch and we will find the perfect beach for you!
