Zanzibar Prison Island tour

Zanzibar Prison island tour

This tour begins with a pickup from your hotel and a half-hour boat trip to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island or Quarantine Island. The island was purchased in 1893 by the former British Prime Minister of Zanzibar and was intended to be used as a prison complex, but it was instead used as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. Today, the island serves as a lovely guesthouse for tourists and is home to a giant tortoise reserve. Here, you'll have the chance to admire, pet, and even feed these magnificent creatures, which were gifted to the island by the governor of Seychelles in 1919. The island also features a nursery for baby tortoises, providing a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

You can choose to go snorkeling in the coral reefs after seeing the reserve, where you can see lovely starfish and seashells and colorful fish, or you can choose to unwind on the white sand beach. The tour ends with a boat return journey to your starting point where you can take in the beautiful views of Stone Town, the bay, and the archipelago.

This tour includes a guided half-day trip (3 to 4 hours), private for your group, a local experienced English-speaking guide (other languages on request, if available), transportation from any hotel in Zanzibar, admission to Changuu-Prison Island and snorkeling equipment. You should bring a swimsuit and towel.  The tour is great for kids of all ages, perfect for people of all fitness levels, and simple to combine with other activities. Don't forget to give the giant tort a small donation.
