The beautiful and historical Stone Town is every bit as synonymous with Zanzibar as the island’s picturesque beaches and shimmering shores.

Stone Town is the cultural heart of the island and the old city area of Zanzibar City. The ‘Town’ got its name from the many multistory buildings that form the landscape of this area. They look like they are made of stone, but, in fact, they are actually made of coral and mortar.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a destination that no traveler should miss!

Here is our guide to travel in Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Why visit Stone Town

A visit to Stone Town is full of history, culture, architecture, and food.

Stone Town wears its history for all to see with its ancient coral-wrought buildings, colonial architecture, and the lingering ghosts of the past slave port. The city retains its old style from when it was an important trading post on the Indian Ocean, even though some restorations are ongoing to preserve the unique architecture. The twisting alleys are alive with so many cultures and stories intertwining and going about their lives.

What to do in Stone Town

Easily the top attraction of Stone Town is simply exploring the fascinating historic streets. Travelers can endlessly wander the winding alleys, traversing bustling bazaars, ornate mosques, grand Arabic houses, and beautiful cathedrals.
