Where to Stay in Zanzibar: A Guide to Zanzibar Beaches

Zanzibar is a group of many small islands and two larger ones, with the main one being Unguja, also known as Zanzibar. Pemba, located in the north, is the second largest island, while Mafia is a small inhabited island and Latham Island is a coral island that serves as a significant breeding ground for seabirds. Visitors can find quiet getaways on Pemba and Mafia, as well as plenty of activities on the main island. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania but operates as a semi-autonomous region and visitors need only a valid passport and visa on arrival.

The best time to visit is from June to February, outside of the rainy season, and can be combined with a mainland safari for a memorable Zanzibar experience.

Located on the main island of Zanzibar, Stone Town is the capital of the region and  a key stop on any trip. This historic neighborhood, which makes up a small portion of the wider city, is known for its labyrinthine alleyways and lively market bazaars.
