Welcome to Matemwe, a charming village on the northeastern coast of Zanzibar.

Known for its stunning white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a laid-back atmosphere, Matemwe is a perfect tropical getaway for travelers seeking relaxation, water sports, or a glimpse into the local Zanzibari way of life.

Why visit Matemwe

Matemwe lures travelers from all over with its pristine beaches, the gentle ocean breeze flowing from over the turquoise waters, and the shade of the swaying palm trees just waiting for people to come and appreciate them.

It’s perfect for travelers who want a holistic relaxation experience in the tropics, without the loud parties of the more touristic areas of the island.

But Matemwe isn’t just about stunning beaches. It’s also a perfect spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The nearby Mnemba Atoll is a vibrant and stunning underwater world with a range of marine life and plenty to discover under the water. There are about 10 different dive sites in the area.

The village is a great place to immerse yourself in local Zanzibari culture, wandering the streets and exploring the bustling markets filled with spices, crafts, and fresh produce.

What to do in Matemwe

The beach in Matemwe is a captivating stretch of pristine beauty, where powdery white sand meets the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Fringed with swaying palm trees, the beach is one of the finest oases for relaxation and serenity on the island. Pick a calm spot for some sunbathing, take a stroll by the calm waters (especially nice at low tide), or jump straight in for a swim!

Explore the reef, whether by wading into the waters on foot at low tide, or heading further out for some snorkeling.

A short boat ride will take you to Mnemba Atoll, one of the best places for snorkeling and diving. Admire the beautiful coral reefs, swim with tropical fish, and try to spot some dolphins or sea turtles.

These waters are also an amazing place for sunset cruises in traditional dhow boats. Sail into the horizon under a sky awash with vibrant hues for a truly magical experience.

For a bit of a cultural-culinary experience, Matemwe is also right by some spice farms, where travelers can go for tours to learn about the history and cultivation of what Zanzibar is famous for: spices.
