Zanzibar Stone Town City Tour

Zanzibar Stone Town City Tour

Depart from your hotel at 9 o'clock and embark on a journey through the rich history and multiculturalism of Zanzibar's Stone Town. The colorful fruit market will be our first destination; it has been operating since 1904 and offers a wide assortment of tropical fruits and spices.

We will then visit the Anglican Cathedral at Mkunazini, built in 1874 on the site of the former slave market. Our local guide will provide insights into the city's slave history and take you to the site where slaves were once auctioned.

Next, we will visit the National Museum of Zanzibar, also known as the Peace Memorial Museum. The museum holds an extensive collection of the island's natural history and artifacts. We will then take a refreshing walk through the Forondhani Gardens and see the former British Consulate, a place where explorers such as Dr. Livingston and Stanley came for administrative matters before embarking on their expeditions.

We will also tour the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, Zanzibar's highest structure and the Sultan's official and ceremonial residence. We'll meander through the winding lanes and see the historic homes, many of which date back more than 150 years. Dr. Livingston's Home will be where we visit to round out our tour.

Quick facts: Stone Town is the island's cultural center and the old city area of Zanzibar City, located on the western shore. The buildings are actually made of mortar and corals and the city retains its 19th century style from when Zanzibar was an important trading center in the Indian Ocean. A range of lodging and transportation choices are available in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
