Paje sits peacefully on the magnificent eastern coast of Zanzibar Island. The village is a tropical paradise known for its breathtaking beaches, azure waters, and vibrant culture.

Whether you’re seeking thrilling water sports, tranquil relaxation, or an immersive cultural experience, Paje has it all, and is more than deserving of a spot on your travel bucket list.

Why visit Paje

Paje has an undeniable charm in its natural beauty. It’s one of the more lively villages in Zanzibar, but the atmosphere is laid back and there’s plenty of relaxation to be found here, as well as plenty of opportunities to meet new people from all over the world.

Known as the “kitesurfing capital” of the island, Paje is one of the best places for kitesurfing in the world. It’s an incredible spot for swimming and other water sports as well. The miles of pristine, powdery white beaches and stunning turquoise waters draw people from all over.

Paje’s underwater world is a treasure trove for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. With a rich diversity of marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and intriguing shipwrecks, exploring the depths of the Indian Ocean is a must-do activity in Paje.

What to do in Paje

If you come to Paje, you really have to do some kitesurfing. As we already mentioned, these waters are famous for being some of the best in the world for kitesurfing. The meter-deep waters, constant winds, soft sandy beaches, and warm weather provide the perfect conditions both for beginners to learn and for pros to show off their skills.

There are plenty of experienced instructors offering lessons here, and plenty of places to rent a board, so even if you’ve never done it before, come to Paje and glide across the water, soaking in the adrenaline rush.

If that is not your thing (or you just want a break), relaxing on the beach is a great way to spend your time in Paje. Unwind, stretch out, bask in the sun, and let the gentle sound of the waves carry your mind to a peaceful place and fully relax.

When the tide is low, you can also wade through the water and go on a reef walk, either solo or with a guide. This is a great way to see the stunning coral and wildlife of the shallow waters, just make sure you have a pair of reef shoes so you don’t hurt your feet!

Paje is also one of the best places on the island for snorkeling and diving. Join an excursion and explore the kaleidoscopic underwater world of this corner of the Indian Ocean. Discover the vibrant coral reefs, encounter tropical fish species, and possibly even swim alongside majestic sea turtles. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring beauty beneath the surface.

You can also take advantage of the clear open waters for a refreshing swim, again one of the best places in Zanzibar to do so!

For something a little different, take a guided tour of nearby spice farms. These tours provide insight into the cultivation and processing of spices such as cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. You’ll have the opportunity to see the plants up close, learn about their uses, and even sample some freshly prepared spice-infused dishes.
