Zanzibar Beach Guide

With so many stunning beaches in Zanzibar, it can be hard to choose just one. Here’s a guide to help you find your perfect slice of paradise. With a variety of options available, you’re sure to find a beach that suits your preferences.

Zanzibar Island Overview

Zanzibar is a group of many small islands and two larger ones, with the main one being Unguja, also known as Zanzibar. Pemba, located in the north, is the second largest island, while Mafia is a small inhabited island and Latham Island is a coral island that serves as a significant breeding ground for seabirds. Visitors can find quiet getaways on Pemba and Mafia, as well as plenty of activities on the main island. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania but operates as a semi-autonomous region and visitors need only a valid passport and visa on arrival.

The best time to visit is from June to February, outside of the rainy season, and can be combined with a mainland safari for a memorable Zanzibar experience.

Stone Town, Zanzibar City

Located on the main island of Zanzibar, Stone Town is the capital of the region and  a key stop on any trip. This historic neighborhood, which makes up a small portion of the wider city, is known for its labyrinthine alleyways and lively market bazaars. A World Heritage Site, Stone Town is full of hidden treasures to be found while wandering its cobblestone streets. It is also rich in history, culture, and gastronomy.

Zanzibar’s major industries include tourism, raffia palms, and spices, many residents also depend on farming and fishing for a living.

How To Get to Zanzibar

Choosing a Zanzibar Beach

With an abundance of islands, finding the perfect Zanzibar beach for your trip can be overwhelming. To simplify your decision, we’ve divided the main island into regions and highlighted the unique features of each area to help you find the ideal beach.

NORTH COAST BEACHES

The northern coast of Zanzibar has a small tidal range and calm waters, making it ideal for swimming and water activities. Nungwi, located in the northernmost tip, is popular for its diving spots, while Kendwa is known for its lively parties during full moon nights.

Pemba Island, located off the north coast, has a less developed tourism industry but offers breathtaking natural beauty, colonial ruins, and serene fishing villages. This island is ideal for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, with activities like diving, mangrove forest excursions, and sunset dhow cruises.

For a comprehensive tour of the north coast, consider the Safari Blue itinerary that includes a visit to Nungwi, regardless of where you’re staying.
